Dharabi Lake in the Punjab province of Pakistan is a hidden gem for adventurers and nature lovers. It is one of the biggest man-made lakes in the Potohar region of Punjab. Named after a small and beautiful village in the Chakwal district, Dharabi Lake is a calm child of the district’s biggest dam, the Dharabi Dam. Go to the lake, catch some tasty fish, have a boat race, or enjoy the cultural show. It will be hard to pull you out of the lakish beauty of Dharabi Valley.
Dharabi – A Village in the Middle of Waters
Dharabi village is an untamed tourist attraction, 119 kilometers away from Islamabad and an hour away from the International Islamabad Airport. Give it a fancy term like the Gorge or Forra, and you will feel the Florida vibes while wandering in this locality. You would be amazed to know that Dharabi is a village in the middle of the splashing waters of the Dharab River. While you travel towards the Dharabi Dam Lake, the Chakwal canyons in the middle of your way will remind you of Egypt’s canyons.
Dharabi is an agricultural wonderland, with farms, crops, and livestock as the top modes of earning livelihood here. Therefore, to manifold agriculture and crop production, the government planned to build a dam over the Dharab River to fulfill the irrigation needs of the adjoining villages. Here’s what happened next.
The Sob Story of Dharabi Dam
Dharabi reservoir, built in 2011, was the dream of the farmers who fancied the dam would turn their thirsty land into gold plains and be born with more crops. Who knew that a dam built to water 6,400 acres at the expanse of Rs. 353 million, would be destined for a design fiasco and abandon the farmers’ futuristic vision to a mere sight of buried canals?
The 117,000-foot-long canals of Dharabi were formed to irrigate eight villages. However, unlike what they were meant for, the canals couldn’t soar to the plots at greater heights due to a design flaw. And thus, land irrigation remained the farmer’s dream instead of a soaked reality. It couldn’t become an empathetic dam, however, an idea to promote this area as a tourist destination surfaced.
Thus, the Tourism Department Cooperation of Punjab (TDCP) penned the concept of turning the abandoned dam into a tourist layout. This initiative resulted in the development of a Dharabi Resort along with many other adventures, to offer a bespoke vacay experience.
Water Sports And Family Gala at Dharabi Lake
Dharabi has now become a popular tourist destination due to its topography, and lots of features like the visit by Siberian birds to the Dharabi Lake. The surroundings of historical marvels like Malot Fort, Takht-e-Bari, and Katas Raja Temple make Dharabi a perfect weekend vacay destination for International tourists and travelers who visit Islamabad, Murree, or Lahore. Owing to the influx of families and explorers to Dharabi, the TDCP also organized Family Gala Festivals in this new favorite spot.

In a few years, we expect upgraded infrastructure, roads, restaurants, and recreational facilities that will improve the scope of employment for local people.
